iGenerationWhat gadgets are littered around your office? iPads, iPhones, smartphones, Blackberries, usb sticks, dictation machines, printers, wifi boxes, business card readers, scanners, mobile broadband sticks, laptops, netbooks, webcams, perhaps even a Kindle?

No doubt it will be a case of different offices, different gadgets! But wherever you go, no doubt the list will be impressive...

But who actually knows how to work or use any of it properly?!

My children teach me to use a lot of what I have - or rather they mock me and shame me into constantly expanding my knowledge and horizons!  But what am I going to do when they leave home? What's going to happen when the wifi breaks down or a new iPhone is launched? I'm going to be truly sunk!!

But let's be honest here, I'm not the only one am I? And whilst I sometimes call myself a techno numpty the reality is that I am in fact far better informed and capable than many I know!

Changing tack slightly I've been really interested to see that rather than techno issues being confined to older workers, those who are in the 28 to 38 age bracket seem to be even more out of touch than I am! But why? Well perhaps its the fact they don't yet have young kids on their case mocking them, or perhaps its just complacency or perhaps, just perhaps, this is an issue that crosses all generations and takes no prisoners?

So... big question of the day is: What are we going to do about it before we all just sink into oblivion as the techno age children take over the world?!

I agree. And I don't have children to learn from. Historically there have always been advances in technology - I think it is up to businesses and individuals to seek out frequent training opportunities, and I am grateful to those HR, accounting and IT professionals who create opportunities for small business employees to get together and learn from.
