Job creation

Huge growth in public sector workersI read a fascinating article today about how 126 workers joined the public payroll each day last year.  Over a year that’s nearly 50,000 extra public servants and a massive 20% of all workers now work in the public sector. No wonder the tax man is struggling to find the money to pay them all. But where are they all working?

My question today though is ‘how many of these extra public servants are working in ‘manufactured’ jobs’? i.e. how many are actually bringing real worth and value to their organisations?

It’s really hard when a line manager sets out the case for yet another member of staff, to know whether that extra headcount is genuinely needed or just another case of wishful thinking. Its never an easy call to make.

But having just undertaken a functional responsibility review within Jaluch (supported by Shirlaws Coaching), part of which looked at where time is actually being spent within the organisation, we were astonished to find that a massive 30+% of our time was just ‘disappearing’ into the ether. And I’m sure this is the case in many organisations. For us, this means that if we now take a step back to review where time is going, we know we will be able to find so many ways to become so much more efficient.

I suspect this process would be frightening in the public sector, but isn’t it about time someone challenged this seemingly reckless rate of recruitment before both individuals and corporations are taxed out of existence to pay for it all?
