Collective Consultation
In today's employment environment there is little the employer can do or change in a work context without some requirement to individually or collectively consult with staff affected. Specifically, any organisation making 20 or more redundancies over a period of time has an obligation to collectively consult with all staff over 30 days prior to making any dismissals. There is also relatively new legislation which requires companies with more than 50 staff to consult with Staff Representatives where a sufficient number of staff has requested a staff consultative forum to be set up.  Failure to consult about redundancies can for example result in awards of 13 weeks' pay per individual affected so this aspect of employment law should not be taken lightly and if in doubt, ask!
