Career Breaks
Whilst employers have a duty to consider leave for a number of reasons, there is no legal obligation to honour a request for a career break or sabbatical.  A career break is effectively a period of unemployment, and with it come a few difficulties, such as whether the employee has continuity of service and where you stand if the business no longer needs them at the end of their break.   

Whilst a career break may be an alternative to permanently losing a valuable employee, there are a host of issues and potential consequences that should be resolved before the leave is agreed.
