The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (MHSWR) requires the appointment in organisations of a Competent Person i.e. someone who is sufficiently skilled and knowledgeable in health and safety law and best practice to support and advise the company on various health and safety matters. Competent help can either be an internal resource or can be provided by an external organisation such as a health and safety consultancy. 'Competent help' is not just the last person who ducked when compliance duties were being handed out at the last team meeting, but is supposed to be someone who has received essential training in health and safety and who knows enough to be aware of best practice, to know when to seek additional help and guidance and who knows their own limitations.
