Staff Monitoring

This is another contentious subject – when does a business need to monitor staff become an invasion of privacy?

On one hand business’s must manage customer service levels and staff performance.  Issues such as downloading pornography has become an increasing problem that is not only illegal but also leaves the company vulnerable to harassment claims if other employees see any material.  On the other hand intercepting massages and listening to phone calls is not conducive to creating a good working environment.

To help employers strike a balance, the Information Commissioner has published guidance for staff monitoring.  The code recommends that all monitoring is open and transparent and staff know why and how the monitoring will take place.  For more information see: www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk
