Not so long ago, at work we had temps who came from an agency, permanent staff who usually worked full time and the occasional fixed term member of staff. Life is not so straightforward nowadays.
Strictly speaking, temporary staff are those engaged on a non-permanent basis who may refer to themselves as employees, self employed, casual workers or agency workers.
In today's workplace some employers are surprised to find that their temps have accrued certain statutory rights (including the right to claim unfair dismissal if they have worked for the same employer for in excess of 12 months). It is also a popular mistake not to allow a temp to accrue holiday as all workers, irrespective of their employment status, accrue rights to statutory holiday from day one.
