So your CV was a hit and you have got your foot in the door with the opportunity to wow your prospective employer at interview. The following tips may help you succeed in securing the job!
1) Do your research Even the bare minimum is better than nothing if your interview is offered at short notice, but make sure that you at least check out the Company website (most will have one) and understand the nature of their business. Arm yourself with as much industry information as you can that is relevant to the job you are applying for. This will make you more confident in phrasing your answers to the interviewer's questions.
2) Know your product! Yes, that's right... read your own CV! Be absolutely prepared to talk through your employment and education history, and most importantly to expand on what you have written, with reference to your ability to do the job in question.
3) Have a stock of intelligent answers Be prepared for at least one headscratchingly hard to answer question! If you think through your answer to a few of these potentially flummoxing enquiries, you'll be able to answer a whole host of them based on the same formula; e.g. "What is it about this organisation that makes you want to work here?" is based on the same principles as, "what do you think you would contribute to our organisation?" If you prepare a comprehensive answer that covers both, you can then add emphasis to whichever part is more relevant to the actual question.
4) Have a stock of intelligent questions! Make sure that you are not left floundering at the end of an interview when given a chance to ask any questions. You need to appear bright and on the ball, not dopey! By thinking through some questions beforehand, such as, where does the Company expect to be in 5 years' time, and how does the advertised role fit into this? You will come across as having a genuine interest in the organisation and your desire to be part of it. Alongside this, you should be aware of any areas of discussion that arise as a part of the interview. Asking a question that arises out of this will demonstrate that you have really been engaged in the conversation and score you extra points!
5) Be organised Make sure that you know the interview location, how you are going to get there and what time you need to arrive. It is best to get there early so that you have time to cool down, and suss out the work environment and culture... You can pick up a lot of hints from reception areas!
6) Mind your P's and Q's Remember that the receptionist, and any other members of staff that you encounter are just as important as the person interviewing you. Surely you want to work in an organisation where your opinions count, if so, bear in mind that everyone you meet will have an opinion of you and that they may well be asked for it!
7) Suits you! It may seem vain, but what you wear has a huge impact on the interviewer's initial impression of you. If in doubt wear a suit, it is unlikely to offend anyone, even those in more creative industries. But most importantly, BE CLEAN!!
8) SMILE Without wanting to recommend that you spend the day with an idiotic grin on your face, remember to smile. In the midst of a nervous situation a big smile can relax you, the interviewer and anyone else caught by your beamer... it's an all round lovely thing to see and will make a great lasting impression!
GOOD LUCK!
