Management Development Training Programme

The Challenge

The Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA) is the UK's largest and leading trade association for the electrical contracting industry. They work closely with government and key national bodies to improve industry standards and procedures. Having spoken to its members and the wider electrical industry, the ECA identified the need to plug a gap and provide a management training programme specifically for this industry.

Jaluch has a long standing relationship with The ECA, providing seminars to its members across the country on a variety of topics including changes to employment legislation and day to day management of employees. The ECA contacted Jaluch to ask them to work with their Education and Training team to write and deliver a Management Training Programme that The ECA could offer its members and the wider electrical sector. It aims to help ECA member firms to support the development of their high-performing employees to further their career and provide the industry with future managers.

The Solution

The ECA Education and Training Team and Jaluch developed a two stage programme consisting of blocks of supervisory level and managerial level training modules. This opens up a development path for an electrician to follow and learn the skills required as their career progresses. It also enables someone to join the programme at the managerial level if their current role and experience allow for it. The course has been designed to include the learning outcomes of the appropriate Chartered Institute of Management (CMI) Introductory Certificate in Team Leading (level 2) and the Introductory Certificate in Management (level 3).

The supervisory course is made up of four modules which cover the key foundations of leading people, the scope of the role of a supervisor and planning and delegating. The nine module managerial course looks at the fundamental skills required of a manager as well as technical learning in the areas of employment law, absence management and business development. Each of the delegates on the managerial programme starts the course with a psychometric profile which acts as a basis for the programme.

Although the Jaluch training style is participative and interactive as a norm we had to ensure that the learning techniques used for the programme were practical and engaging as this is the preferred method of learning for the delegates. Jaluch came up with innovative solutions for learning theories and ideas through practical exercises and games. Furthermore the majority of delegates were used to working ‘on the tools’ so Jaluch worked hard to break down the formality of “the classroom” quickly to ensure delegates felt at ease and ready to learn.

The Results

The ECA has been extremely pleased with the programme that Jaluch has developed and the training that has been delivered throughout the pilot courses. Following this success the programme is now being rolled out across the country as the industry is keen to take up this offering that previously was unavailable. Some larger electrical contractors are considering running the programmes ‘in house’.

Delegates have expressed an additional benefit in having the opportunity to work with individuals from different companies, profiting from their experiences at the same time as learning from the trainers.

Feedback from the members who have attended the courses is sought and responded to by The ECA to ensure that the course is operating at its optimum level; The ECA have also worked hard with Jaluch to make tweaks and changes following the pilot course in response to delegate feedback. Meetings have been set up between Jaluch, The ECA and a selection of employers to see how the delegates are performing back in the workplace.

Here are some of the comments delegates made after the training:

  • “I believe that following the training it will make me a better supervisor”
  • “Very relevant to my job”
  • “Enjoyed having different people from different companies so we had a broad spectrum of opinions and stories”
  • “Using games helped us to think about our issues”
  • “Relevant and concise”
  • “Informative, well presented, easy to understand”
  • “Kept your interest with constantly changing subjects”
  • “Promoted good ideas and practices to improve supervisory skills”

Iain Macdonald, Head of ECA Education and Training added:

“ECA’s goal was to develop management training tailored specifically for electrical contracting businesses, giving our employers a means to formally prepare their staff for key management and supervisory roles. By partnering with Jaluch, we have been able to exceed this ambition, offering a course with not just the right content, but in a format our candidates tell us they find ideal. The independent mark of quality of the programme is that we have gained CMI accreditation for it, an achievement which I know is in no small part down to the unfailing expertise and commitment brought by Jaluch”.
